Im in a tough spot right now. I dont want to pay $900 for a rear main seal if its the oil pan seal. Im thinkin about going back to ask them to recheck and make sure where the leak is coming from. I also am considering bring it home and cleaning the area myself and checking for the leak.
Here are 2 pictures of the oil at the same spot. The picture with less quality shows the oil leaking which turned out to be from the oil pan gasket at 100k miles. The higher quality picture shows the new oil leaking from the same spot at 237k miles. Its possible this leaking is coming from that area or leaking down from the top of the oil pan seal. Either way I need to know for sure before accepting the repairs.
The function of the Volkswagen oil pan gasket is very simple yet extremely vital. Oil pan gaskets seal the bottom of you , , or other VW's engine, the area where all of the engine oil is stored.
The oil pan is on the bottom of the engine, so any oil leaks from the top or front of the engine could drain down and look like an oil pan leak. It's important to verify that there are no other leaks before having the oil pan resealed.
